File Name Shorten

With email and other options today it is possible to end up with long file names that might not be acceptable for CD recording software.  But what if someone has nested directories and perhaps thousands of files to look for where some may have long file names?  How does one fix that without tedious work?

The rpsoft 2000 filemod program has many key features, one of which is an operation to verify and shorten file names in bulk.  Yes, you can put the files that you wish saved on a cd inside a directory - and even have many nested directories inside.

Example

Below is an example of a shortened file name:

The original name of this file was set to be:

"this is a file name that is way too long that we wish to shorten to a shorter length.txt"

Using filemod and setting the length for the main name to be 50 characters long, the following name resulted:

"this is a file name that is way too long that w~19.txt"

Note that it truncated the main name to be 50 characters long and that it also changed the last characters to "w~19".  Filemod will try and pick a unique number at the end of the file name in case there are several file names with the same beginnings in your file system.

Note that the full name length did not include the length of the extension ".txt", such that if that length is important, the total length would be 54 characters.  An easy way to avoid problems is to ensure that you set the length of filemod shortening to a lower number - perhaps 5 characters less - of what is allowed.

Feature

If you have ever shortened a number of file names manually, it can be quite tedious.  Having a bulk file name shortener can sure make that tedious work disappear.

Limitations

Note that filemod will shorten only file names and not directory names.  The reason for that is that filemod follows directories to find its way through your directories or nested directories, and if those names were changed or shortened, then it could not find its way back.  However, in this case, we find that there are fewer long directory names to be changed than file names, so that should become less of an issue than the file names themselves.
